Following the same format as Book 4, Midlands and North West and Book 3, Western, the new edition of Book 2, Eastern (3rd edition) was published in September 2006.

Extended to 72 pages, the new edition includes 54 maps in full colour specifically highlighting electrified lines by type and extent together with other major assets. The area covered can seen from the Index Map shown here. The standard Quail Track Diagrams layout is used in schematic format including all track work, stations, level crossings, tunnels, signal boxes and other major infrastructure. Coverage includes Network Rail routes with distances and Engineers' Line References plus private and preserved lines. The information in the book was current as at the date of publication.

New in this edition are the major changes at Leeds, revisions at Peterborough and a host of other locations, together with the new layouts at Stratford International and Temple Mills. The new key, abbreviations set and level crossing designations follow the format now standardised across the series and the Index is extended to cover over 2,600 locations, assets and other names.  Another new feature is the addition of start and finish pages for the 300 plus items in the ELR index.
